What’s my Purpose A Fun Conversation with my Mind

What’s my Purpose? A Fun “Conversation” with my Mind

Sometime ago I got up in the morning with a sense of discomfort. Almost like I didn’t want to wake up at all to experience another day. Clearly, that state of mind triggered a slightly uncomfortable emotion, so I saw an opportunity to dig deeper. I decided to ask a question and give space to whatever happens. In other words, put my attention and watch carefully to what comes next.

Me: Aloha! What’s going on? Why do I sense this feeling?

Mind: It’s because you don’t have a purpose. You (I, the mind, etc.) got to have a purpose in life.

…Space…

Me: Why do I need a purpose in life?

Mind: Because I need something to do. Because it makes you (me, the mind) feel significant, important, etc.
(Notice how the mind sometimes thinks using I, and sometimes me, you, etc.)

…Space…

Me: What happens if I don’t have a purpose?

Mind: Without a purpose, what’s the point of living? Without a purpose, you will wander around life with no direction, feeling lost and depressed. You may hit poverty or just die unhappy or unfulfilled. Nobody will respect you. Not even yourself. Everyone has to have a purpose.

…Space…

I then realized a few things about this “purpose”

There’s Fear. The mind was very clear. There’s fear here. The mind basically believes that the objective of having a purpose is to avoid these “risks” which are all driven from fear.

The need to find a purpose is a mind concept. Without a purpose you may wonder, why am I here? And then, if the why is unknown, you may ask, who am I? And if this is also unknown, what’s left? Eventually in this self inquiry process, you reach a blank space where all these thoughts and emotions are witnessed. And, at that state, there’s no question of a purpose. You either already know, or you don’t. And both options feel authentic, natural, and peaceful.

You may already know your purpose

(Or feel a strong connection to something)

It can be anything, actually. A rocket scientist, a researcher who looks for ways to save humanity, a teacher, a student, an athlete, a coach, a thinker, a tailor, a spiritual leader. You name it. You may have multiple “purposes”. What’s more important is the how, rather than the what. Do you find yourself loving it, or is it just a mean to an end? Do you always have to “win” or the act itself is what you feel attracted to?

You don’t know

(Or you don’t even want to have a purpose at all)

Having a purpose in life may enable you to express yourself as a human. At the same time, following someone else dreams as your own purpose may limit the life you can experience. It can narrow your point of view in that attempt to achieve your desired outcome which you believe is your “purpose”. This is a mind thinking structure you can observe and witness. Without a goal, a task, or a purpose, there’s a sense of lightness, a wider vision that can tap into the broader intelligence that life carries. Endless possibilities! Paradoxically, it is then that you may find yourself living your purpose. without even trying. Effortlessly.

What’s the Purpose of Humanity?

Obviously, any topic that involves the “I”, “me” or “my” is relevant to everyone. So, what’s the purpose of mankind then? Definitely, there’s a strong shift towards consciousness. More and more people “wake up” and feel there’s more to life than what’s on the surface. If you find yourself strongly attracted to these type of conversations, then it is already happening in you. According to many spiritual teaching, this, by itself, may be “the purpose”. And it is happening now, as we speak.

Even more, modern technology has accelerated this in multiple ways. The internet and ease of transportation has made the world a global village. There’s no need to travel months to a remote temple on the top of a mountain to access sacred wisdom. You can just read this website 🙂 At the same time, we can also witness the harmful effect of this technology on our mother earth and our bodies. Things like Climate Change and Global Warming, not to mention all sort of chronic disease. Are they a part of the purpose or the evolution of humanity?

Regardless, we are becoming more conscious. But, where are we going from here?

Modern science has discovered several ways to enhance the human body and the entire human experience. We now know enough to extend our lifespan and also, our ability to live a healthy life (also known as healthspan). With that said, physical form is still limited.

Now, let’s think about this. We are a young species that is still evolving. Yet, we have made so much progress. In 1000, 2000 or 3000 years from now, human beings may evolve to a point they fully recognize and live as beings rather than the physical human form. We may be able to shift consciousness from one form or vehicle to another. We may not be limited to 120 years of a lifetime in one human form.

Then, to make the experience even better, we may decide to also change the environment the “vehicle” lives. It can be earth, it can be elsewhere. As multidimensional beings, this feels quite unlimited, right? What is the next step, then? Will there a point where all is known and nothing new is left to experience? Perhaps then, to create a more powerful experience, we’ll make our consciousness forget about all these unlimited capabilities…Wait a minute, isn’t that what’s happening now on earth? And if so, what does this tell us about the question of purpose?

You may or may not know your purpose. Regardless, becoming a “seeker” of your life purpose is one of those endless “spiritual” mind generated tasks. Just like the “Am I aligned with life?” question which we discussed yesterday, giving enough space for this discovery, a curious authentic and fresh self inquiry may reveal what’s already there.

Until our next talk, aloha and love.
